About the artwork
Christ’s body lies low in the picture as Mary holds him with a grief that feels direct and human. The rocky diagonal pulls the eye toward the dead Christ, while the angels above twist in anguish. Giotto’s symbolism is rooted in the body: sorrow, faith, and divine loss are made visible through gesture and weight.
