About the artwork
Velázquez places the Infanta, her attendants, the painter, and the reflected king and queen inside one charged courtly space. The mirror turns the viewer into part of the royal scene and makes power depend on where one stands. The painting is a meditation on seeing, status, art, and the hidden machinery of a royal image.
