About the artwork
Three Roman brothers raise their arms toward the swords held by their father, pledging themselves to the defense of Rome. The hard lines of the men contrast with the collapsed grief of the women, turning the painting into a conflict between public duty and private love. David uses ancient Rome as a stage for sacrifice, loyalty, and civic virtue.
