About the sculpture
Augustus raises his arm in the gesture of command, presenting himself as ruler, general, and restorer of order. The cuirass relief refers to the return of Roman standards from Parthia, while Cupid on a dolphin links the Julian family to Venus. The statue is imperial propaganda in marble, built to make political power look divinely sanctioned.
