About the sculpture
Donatello shows David as a youthful bronze nude standing over the severed head of Goliath. The sword, hat, and relaxed pose make the victory feel psychological rather than physically forceful. The sculpture revived the freestanding nude after antiquity and gave Florence a potent image of fragile courage.
