Why It Matters

Why It Matters

The Capitoline demonstrates how tradition can be radically reinterpreted without being betrayed. Michelangelo’s design honors Rome’s ancient authority while creating something entirely new — proof that living tradition is not static preservation but creative renewal.

The Experience

The Experience

The Capitoline Hill was once the religious and political summit of ancient Rome, home to the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus. In the 16th century Michelangelo completely redesigned the summit into one of the most harmonious urban spaces ever created — the trapezoidal Piazza del Campidoglio with its elegant palaces, central equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius, and grand ramped staircase. Today it houses the Capitoline Museums, whose collections of Roman sculpture and Renaissance art are among the finest in the world. Standing in the piazza at dusk, one feels the seamless conversation between ancient power and Renaissance idealism.
